The iPad Air 2 is still ruling the roost as the best tablet
in the world, but with prices starting at £399 and rising to £659, it's
clearly priced in a bracket way above many people's budget.
Apple's sky-high prices mean those wanting a more affordable tablet experience will have to look elsewhere, although the iPad mini 2 has seen a price cut since the iPad mini 4 and iPad mini 3 arrived on the scene. It's still not super cheap, but it can just about be considered a budget tablet now.
Google's
operating system now adorns a multitude of tablets, from those priced
at the same lofty heights as Apple's offerings (many of which will be
packing Android Marshmallow
soon) to suspiciously cheap tablets that can be picked up for less than
£100 at your local supermarket – although we'd advise against
purchasing most of these.
Before
you get onto the full list of the best cheap tablets, we've put
together our top five choices into a short but handy video. Here are our
favourite choices for the best cheap tablet you can buy right now.
Weight: 313g | Dimensions: 115 x 191 x 10.6mm | OS: Fire OS 5 | Screen size: 7-inch | Resolution: 1024 x 600| CPU: Quad-core 1.3GHz | RAM: N/A | Storage: 8GB | Battery: N/A | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Family friendly
Sturdy design
Poor selection of apps
Questionable OS design
Amazon
has gone for the lowest price possible on the new Fire tablet, and that
means it's not for everybody. You can pick it up for £50 and Amazon
thinks you'll want six around your home as well as giving one to your
kids.
Considering the price, it has some good spec and has a
sturdy design that isn't going to break right away. If money is your
biggest factor, the Amazon Fire may be the one for you. Read the full review: Amazon Fire
If you're in the market for a low cost tablet with up to date specs then the new Amazon Fire HD 8 and HD 10 deliver.
They
won't bless you with a stunning display, sultry design or slick
performance - but they will give you enough grunt under the hood to play
even the most demanding of games.
The heavily modified Android
interface (known as FireOS) may not be to everyone's liking, but for
less tech savvy users it's arguably less cluttered and easier to use. Read the full review: Amazon Fire HD 10 and HD 8
Weight: 290g | Dimensions: 169 x 103 x 10.7mm | OS: Android (Fire OS) | Screen size: 6-inch | Resolution: 800 x 1280 | CPU: quad-core | RAM: 1GB | Storage: 8GB/16GB | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Compact size
Prime integration
Awful cameras
Fire OS can be restrictive
The
Amazon Fire HD 6 is one of the most enticing tablets to come from
Amazon, mixing efficient integration with the Prime services and a
compact footprint that makes it easy to drop in your bag.
It's no
tablet king, but it does what it sets out to well. Its crazy low price
tag means it's perfect to hand off to the kids without the fear that
they're wielding an expensive bit of kit around.
It may be too
small for some, and the cameras aren't up to much, but the Fire HD 6
gives you the core tablet experience for not very much outlay, making it
a budget tablet worth buying. Read the full review: Amazon Fire HD 6
Weight: 338g | Dimensions: 212.8 x 124 x 8.5mm | OS: Android 5.0 | Screen size: 8-inch | Resolution: Full HD | CPU: octa-core | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 16GB | Battery: 4650mAh | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2MP
Good screen
4G mobile internet
Limited to EE
Poor cameras
The
EE Harrier Tab is a tablet of greater taste than its shiny-as-you-like
fake metal rear might suggest. It doesn't have an EE-heavy interface,
performs very well, and has a well thought out design that is both light
and practical.
If the idea of a 4G tablet appeals, this is one of
the best budget options. It is much better than the Vodafone
alternative, the Smart Tab prime 6, thanks to its higher-quality screen.
However,
if mobile internet is something you can live without, the Tesco Hudl 2
is an even better buy at a jaw-dropping £99, though that budget slate
has sadly been discontinued, so it will be hard to find. Read the full review: EE Harrier Tab
What's
this? The iPad mini 2 in a list of the best cheap tablets? Why yes. It
may be a premium slate but it's been superseded by the iPad mini 4 and the already discontinued iPad mini 3 and as such it's dropped in price to under £250.
Better
yet, as the iPad mini 3 is basically the same tablet with added Touch
ID you hardly miss out on anything by buying this older model, though
you do miss out on the power-boost found in the iPad mini 4.
Still,
with a brilliant screen, a stunning design and quite a lot of power the
iPad mini 2 is difficult to beat at this price point. It looks, feels
and performs like something far more expensive.
When
the Nexus 9 launched it was going toe-to-two with the iPad in terms of
screen size and price. However that was back in 2014 and the Nexus 9 can
now be picked up for a lot less.
Buy it direct from Google and
you're faced with a steep £319 charge, but shop around and you can get
it for just a touch over £200 now, which makes it an incredibly
attractive offering. Issues with screen quality are easier to handle at
this price - it's still great, just not up to iPad Air 2 standards.
There's a decent slug of power, Android Marshmallow
inbound and HTC's BoomSound speakers for excellent sound quality - and
it's now super cheap price tag means it's the best budget tablet around. Read the full review: Google Nexus 9

Best tablet 2016: the top tabs we've reviewed
The tablet is now a thing - from the days when nobody considered a
laptop without a keyboard to be a good thing to today, where a slate
full of more power than some games consoles is nestled in bags across
the world.
And with that popularity comes the dreaded notion of
choice. Do you eschew Apple's high prices, join the Android brigade and
find the best iPad alternative? Or jump on board Cupertino's lovetrain,
and use one of the most popular tablets on the planet?
We've made it easy for you and pulled together the best tablets of the moment available in the UK.
It's
a difficult process divining which place each of these excellent
tablets should occupy in our list, so we take into account multiple
elements including performance, battery life, screen quality and more.
Price
plays a part, as does age: a tablet that's been replaced by a sequel
will tumble down the rankings as you can get all the great features on a
better slate.
If none of the best tablets here take your fancy then head on over to our tablet reviews pages, where you'll find in-depth reviews for many more models.
Let us know your thoughts on the top 10 (and whether you think we've got the order wrong) in the comment box below.
1. iPad Pro 9.7
A brilliant tablet that brings power to portability
Weight: 437g | Dimensions: 240 x 169.5 x 6.1 mm | OS: iOS 9.3 | Screen size: 9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 pixels | CPU: A9X | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 32GB/128GB/256GB| microSD slot: No | Battery: TBC | Rear camera: 12MP | Front camera: 5MP
Great speakers
Pencil and keyboard support
Pricey with accessories
Not as much RAM as larger iPad Pro
The
best tablet you can buy right now is the iPad Pro 9.7 - the smaller
screen with powerful innards is the best combination on the market.
While
there are plenty of brilliant Android tablets around at the moment, the
new iPad offers a lot of the power of the larger iPad Pro, along with
the Smart Keyboard and Pencil support, but brings it in a much more
bag-and-palm friendly size. Oh, and those four speakers are just
brilliant too! Read the full review: iPad Pro 9.7
2. Google Pixel C
This is the best Android tablet
Weight: 517g | Dimensions: 242 x 179 x 7mm | OS: Android Marshmallow| Screen size: 10.2-inch | Resolution: 2560 x 1800 | CPU: Tegra X1 | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2MP
Google's
done it – the new Pixel C is the best Android tablet. The Pixel C has
it all: a fantastic display, heaps of power and a premium design. Plus,
for those willing to splash the cash, the keyboard is a great accessory.
It's not quite a laptop replacement, but for those in the market for a
premium Android tablet - look no further. Read the full review: Google Pixel C
3. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
A top notch iPad rival
Weight: 256g/389g | Dimensions: 198.6 x 134.8 x 5.6mm/237.3 x 169 x 5.6mm | OS: Android 5.1 | Screen size: 8.0-inch/9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Octa-core | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: 4000mAh/5870mAh | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2.1MP
There
are plenty of reasons to invest in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 -
especially if you're after a top Android tablet. This is the best tablet
that Samsung has ever produced - it's both reading and web
surfing-friendly and you can pick it up in 8-inch and 9.7-inch variants.
Almost impossibly thin, pumped full of power and with a slicker
interface it gives the iPad Air 2 a real run for its money. Read the full review: Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
The
best 7-inch tablet at the moment is definitely the iPad mini 4. If you
like the look of Apple's iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro, but find them a) too
big, b) too expensive or c) both? Well you're in luck as the diminutive
iPad mini 4 gives you the best of Apple's tablet world in a form factor
which is not only beautiful, but highly portable. Read the full review: iPad mini 4
The
Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet is the best option for PS4 owners as it allows
you to stream games from your console direct to the tablet when you're
in another room of your house. Link up your PS4 controller to the Z4
Tablet and you'll be gaming in bed, in the kitchen and on the toilet.
The included keyboard dock in the box also makes for a great stand. Read the full review: Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet
The
iPad Pro won't be for everyone, but for those it does appeal to you're
unlikely to find a better tablet for your needs. Whether its graphics,
multi-tasking or providing a pseudo-Mac experience when you're away from
the office the iPad Pro is capable of so much. Even the Pencil -
hilarious name aside - is an impressive tool for a particular niche. For
pro's, this is the best tablet out there and for some it's more than
capable of replacing a laptop. Read the full review: iPad Pro
Originally
a rather expensive Google-branded tablet, the Nexus 9 has now dropped
so much in price it's the best value tablet out there. There's a whole
load of power, stock Android and a high res screen making it a great
all-round tablet at a very affordable price. Read the full review: Nexus 9
Tablets
don't have to be big and cumbersome, and the rather clumsily named Sony
Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is testament to just that. It's not Sony's
best tablet - that goes to the Z4 further up the page, but it's
super-slim profile, waterproof chassis, bright display and solid line up
of specs means it'll comfortably slip in your bag and won't baulk at
the first sign of rain. Read the full review: Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
Can
a tablet really replace your laptop or home PC? That's still up for
debate, but the best tablet trying to make that happen is the Microsoft
Surface Pro 4 - and it does a fine job with the full blown version of
Windows 10, an integrated kickstand and optional keyboard attachment.
Great for for creative professionals, students and everyday folks alike. Read the full review: Microsoft Surface Pro 4
Until
the iPad Pro 9.7, this was the best tablet in the world. Even though it
has been replaced by Apple, it's still a brilliant tablet that has
further raised the bar for the rest of the competition in terms of build
quality, features and performance. The best part is this is now cheaper
thanks to the release of the iPad Pro 9.7. Apple's range of
tablet-optimised apps and a slick user interface makes the iPad Air 2
extremely versatile while also being incredibly easy, and enjoyable, to
use. Read the full review: iPad Air 2
Tablet apps
As with today's best smartphones,
applications play a big role on tablets – once you've decided which of
these tablets is right for you, check out our top app lists so you can
get your fill of Temple Run, update your friends on Facebook and read the latest news, all on a bigger screen.
If
you're not quite ready to part with your cash, then take a look at the
slates which will be coming out this year. A few have launched but we're
waiting for them to come in for review before seeing if they make it
into the top 10, while others are based on rumours but we feel confident
they will arrive in 2016.
Weight: 693g | Dimensions: 290.3 x 198.8 x 6.3mm | OS: Windows 10 | Screen size: 12-inch | Resolution: 2160 x 1440 | CPU: Intel Core M | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 128GB/256GB | Battery: up to 10.5 hours | Rear camera: 5MP | Front camera: 5MP
Sleek design
Good use of Windows 10
Poor keyboard
Plastic design
The
Samsung Galaxy TabPro S was unvieled at the very start of 2016 and
boasts a great screen, solid build and Windows 10 - but you can't buy it
just yet. It's an odd device, but one that works better than we
expected it to. The keyboard dock isn't great, with a cramped mouse and
keys which aren't the easiest to type on - but over all Samsung's made a
solid Windows slate. Read our hands on review: Samsung Galaxy TabPro S
Weight: 640g | Dimensions: 278.8 x 194.1 x 6.9mm | OS: Windows 10 | Screen size: 12-inch | Resolution: 2160 x 1440 | CPU: 6th Gen Intel Core m | RAM: 4/8GB | Storage: 128/256/512GB | microSD slot: No | Battery: 4430mAh | Rear camera: No | Front camera: 5MP
Solid design
Keyboard accessory
No MicroSDS card slot
Only one USB port
Huawei's
first Windows 10 device is a well-designed 2-in-1 that rivals the
Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and iPad Pro in places. It's a promising, yet
pricey, first 2-in-1 from the Chinese company, managing to feel fresh
despite arriving late to the party. Read the full review: Huawei MateBook
Sony Xperia Z6 Tablet
The high-end waterproof tablet
Things have gone a bit pear-shaped in Sony's camp in 2016. After we expect it to launch either the flagship Xperia Z6 or Xperia Z6 Tablet (or both) at MWC 2016,
Sony did neither - instead launching the confusing new X series
instead. That's left the talk of the Xperia Z6 Tablet a little up in the
air. Will we ever see this tablet? We're not sure, but eyes are now on
IFA 2016 in Berlin this September. Tips for Sony:what we want to see on the Sony Xperia Z6 Tablet
iPad Mini 5
Thinner, lighter and even more portable?
The
popular iPad mini range has won fans around the world, probably due to
the fact it's the cheapest iPad offering in Apple's range. While the
arrival of the iPad mini 5 in 2016 is likely, there's a small question
mark around whether Apple will bother after criticism for its less than
impressive iPad mini 3 update. If it does arrive expect more power with a
new processor, iOS 10 on screen and the same premium metal body. What it needs to beat:iPad mini 4

The best Android tablets in the world
Anti-iPad? Then have we got the top slates for you!
Update: We've updated this list to get you the very
best of the Android tablet world - if you're against iPads, this is the
list you need to be checking out. Our list of the best Android tablets in the world - regularly updated
Looking for a tablet and thinking about an Android device? Well, there are other options out there with Windows 10 tablets such as the Surface Pro 4 - but tablets running the new Marshmallow OS remainthe main rival to the iOS 9-toting iPad Pro, iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad mini 4.
Some
Android tablets have 10-inch screens, others seven, some land somewhere
in between and a handful even push the boundaries past 10 inches. There
are big differences in battery life, processing power, RAM and price.
We've
gathered together the best the Android tablet market has to offer, so
read on to see which Google-powered slates you should be considering.
8. Amazon Fire HD 6
Small enough to be a smartphone, it packs a punch
Weight: 290g | Dimensions: 169mm x 103mm x 10.7mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 6-inch | Resolution: 1280x800 | CPU: Quad-core | RAM: 1GB | Storage: 8/16GB | Battery: value | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
The
Fire HD 6 is one of the most enticing tablets to come from Amazon,
mixing efficient integration with the Prime services and a compact
footprint that makes it easy to drop in your bag.
It's no tablet
king, but it does what it sets out to well, and considering its price
tag the Amazon Fire HD 6 is difficult to knock.
The
cameras are worth avoiding, and the built in speakers aren't great, but
as long as you can get over Amazon's slightly restrictive Fire OS and
the lack of Google's services then the HD 6 is a perfect pocket slate. Read the full review: Amazon Fire HD 6
7. Samsung Galaxy Tab S
If you're after a tablet with a great screen... this is it
The
exterior design of the Tab S is nothing to write home about but it's
thin and it's light and that counts for a lot when it comes to tablets.
It helps the frame get out of the way of the screen, which is the real
winner here.
Available in 8.4- and 10.5-inch variants, the Tab S
range packs in a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM, a microSD slot,
8MP rear camera, 2.1MP front snapper and Android Lollipop.
Both
tablets have fingerprint scanners for added security, but the plastic
body may put a few off with Apple's slates sporting a more attractive
design.
There's a new Tab series on the block, in the form of the
Galaxy Tab S2, but the original S duo are still a great buy -
especially now they're a little bit cheaper. Read the full review: Samsung Galaxy Tab S
6. Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro
Taking 'Netflix and chill' to the next level
Weight: 665g | Dimensions: 246.9 x 179.1 x 4.6mm | OS: Android 5.1.1 | Screen size: 10.1-inch | Resolution: 2560 x 1600 | CPU: Intel Atom quad-core | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 16GB/32GB | Battery: 10,200mAh | Rear camera: 13MP | Front camera: 5MP
The Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro is packed full of media-focused features and sports a unique, distinctive design.
There's
a built in stand to take the heft off your hands, while the integrated
projector means you can enjoy big screen entertainment away from your
TV, though the screen is sharp enough that you won't always feel the
need to use a projector anyway.
All that tech does make it less
portable than most tablets on this list and the UI could be better, but
it's a fairly unique option. Read the full review: Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro
When
it comes to watching video or playing games, the Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet
Compact excels with a decent slug of power and its eye-pleasing display.
Add
in the thin, light, waterproof body and you have a great tablet for
long trips and boring work commutes which can be happily slid into a bag
without taking up too much space or weighing you down.
The
components inside the Z3 Tablet Compact are getting on a bit now, and
it doesn't have the slickness of the 8-inch iPad mini 4 or Galaxy Tab S2
- but it's certainly still worth considering. Read the full review: Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact
It's
been a while since we last had a large Nexus slate and even longer
since HTC went anywhere near a tablet, yet here we are with the HTC made
Nexus 9.
It was worth the wait too, thanks to a powerful 64-bit
processor, BoomSound speakers, a long lasting battery and the promise of
speedy Android updates.
It's
found itself a fairly unique size point too at 8.9 inches. Too big to
be considered a small or even medium sized tablet, but some way smaller
than the 10.1-inch Android slates that there are so many of. Whether
that's a good or bad thing is subjective but it certainly helps it stand
out. Google has stopped selling the slate to make room for the Pixel C,
but it can still be found if you shop around. Read the full review: Google Nexus 9
Sony's
Xperia Z4 Tablet is one of the best Android tablets on the market right
now, ensuring the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and iPad Air 2 get a real work
out.
We'd like to see a 64GB option, but 32GB plus the inclusion
of a microSD slot will suit most people, and while the cameras don't
cover themselves in glory they're more of a vanity feature on a tablet.
The
Xperia Z4 Tablet is a great slate, and it's one of the genuine
alternatives to the iPad. Android is still not the perfect ecosystem for
tablets, but with a 2K display on the front and such a nice-looking
design Sony has made something rather lovely. Read the full review: Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet
2. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
Samsung's latest flagship Android slate is super
Weight: 256g/389g | Dimensions: 198.6 x 134.8 x 5.6mm/237.3 x 169 x 5.6mm | OS: Android 6.0.1 | Screen size: 8.0-inch/9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Octa-core | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: 4000mAh/5870mAh | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2.1MP
There
are plenty of reasons to invest in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 -
especially if you're after one of the best Android tablets on the
market.
It's reading and web surfing-friendly, while the new 4:3
screen and general size and shape is better suited for most things.
Videos work better on its predecessor thanks to its elongated aspect
ratio - but they don't exactly look bad here.
You
can pick the Tab S2 up in 8-inch and 9.7-inch variants, to challenge
Apple's iPad and iPad mini ranges, with the smaller option being more
portable and cheaper.
Almost impossibly thin, pumped full of power
and with a slicker version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface on board the
Galaxy Tab S2 gives the iPad Pro 9.7 and Pixel C a real run for their
money. Read the full review: Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
1. Google Pixel C
The best Android tablet around
Weight: 517g | Dimensions: 242 x 179 x 7mm | OS: Android 6.0.1 | Screen size: 10.2-inch | Resolution: 2560 x 1800 | CPU: Tegra X1 | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2MP
Google's
done it – it's made the best Android tablet around. The Pixel C has it
all: a fantastic display, heaps of power and a premium design.
Okay,
it's not quite got it all - it's a little on the heavy side and the
pricey (yet rather clever) keyboard dock isn't fully utilised by the
Android interface, which is made very much for touch and not physical
keys and productivity.
Those
points aside, the Pixel C goes toe-to-toe with the iPad Air 2 and even
the iPad Pro 9.7 with its clean stock Android interface, sultry metal
body and super screen.
If you're looking for the best of Google in a tablet, the Pixel C gives you just that. Read the full review: Google Pixel C
