The best budget tablets in 2017: the top budget options do offer excellent value for money

Now it's a strange time for cheap tablets, and even tablets in general. Exciting releases are few and far between these days, and the most fascinating tech is restricted to the top end of the market.
The best tablet in the world is the new iPad Pro, and that will set you back an awful lot of cash. Best budget tablet it is not.
All hope is not lost though, and we've put a selection of the most affordable tablets together - but let's make one thing clear. There aren't many to choose from.
It's pretty much slim pickings for anyone looking to pick up a cheap tablet, but the slates below do offer excellent value for money.

The best budget tablets  countdown

4. Asus ZenPad S 8.0

Image result for Asus ZenPad S 8.0
A slick, professional slate with a great screen and performance

Low price
Superb high-res screen
A lot of pre-installed apps
Average camera
The Asus ZenPad S 8.0 - also known as the Asus ZenPad Z580C - is a great value tablet with a premium looking design.
It's one of the best looking slates on this list and packs a surprising 10 hour battery life, microSD support as well as a great 8-inch screen. The best part though is the price, it's only £129.99.
Don't want to spend much on your new tablet? This choice from Asus is one of the best options for you.

If you're looking for something newer from Asus, check out our ZenPad 3S 10 review - it's not cheap enough to feature in our best budget tablet list, but it does represent great value for money. In terms of a follow up to the ZenPad S 8.0, we're currently looking at IFA 2017 in September.

3. Amazon Fire 7 (2017)

Image result for Amazon Fire 7 (2017)

Amazon's latest low-cost slate is excellent child fodder
Weight: 295g | Dimensions: 192 x 115 x 9.6mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 7-inch | Resolution: 1,024 x 600 | CPU: 1.3GHz Quad-core | Storage: 8GB/16GB | Battery: up to 8 hours | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Crazily cheap price
Strong battery life
Amazon Appstore still lacking
Screen dull and low-res
If you're in the market for a low cost tablet with up to date specs then the new Amazon Fire HD 8 and HD 10 deliver.
They won't bless you with a stunning display, sultry design or slick performance - but they will give you enough grunt under the hood to play even the most demanding of games.
The heavily modified Android interface (known as Fire OS) may not be to everyone's liking, but for less tech savvy users it's arguably less cluttered and easier to use.

  • What's next? Amazon's only just launched the new Amazon Fire 7 and Fire HD 8, so it's unlikely to give us any other major tablet upgrades this year. There's a small chance of the Fire HD 10 getting a reboot, but don't hold your breath.

2. Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017)

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/712HqyRvASL._SX522_.jpg

If you live on Amazon you'll want a Fire
Weight: 369g | Dimensions: 214 x 128 x 9.7mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 8-inch | Resolution: 800 x 1280 | CPU: 1.3GHz quad-core | Storage: 8GB/16GB | Battery: up to 12 hours | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Decent value
Improved speakers
Few meaningful upgrades
A little slow in places
The Amazon HD 6 may be showing its age, but it's still a top-notch tablet for the money, which is why it features so highly in our best budget tablet list.
It's no tablet king, but it does what it sets out to well. Its crazy low price tag means it's perfect to hand off to the kids without the fear that they're wielding an expensive bit of kit around.
It may be too small for some, and the cameras aren't up to much, but the Fire HD 6 gives you the core tablet experience for not very much outlay, making it a budget tablet worth buying.

  • What's next? The same message as above really, with Amazon only just launching the new Fire 7 and Fire HD 8 it's unlikely to give us any other major tablet upgrades this year.

1. iPad Mini 2

Image result for iPad Mini 2 images

The best value iPad out there
Weight: 331g | Dimensions: 200 x 134.7 x 7.5mm | OS: iOS 9 | Screen size: 7.9-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Dual-core 1.3GHz | RAM: 1GB | Storage: 16/32/64/128GB | Battery: 6470mAh | Rear camera: 5MP | Front camera: 1.2MP
Amazing screen
Brilliant design
Similar-spec rivals are much cheaper
16GB too low storage
The iPad Mini 2 is still in our best cheap tablets list, but only just.
Apple has now stopped officially making it and selling it on its website, which means new iPad Mini 2 tablets are fast becoming hard to find. You'll want to act fast, because when they're gone, they're gone.
The iPad Mini 2 is something a bit special. It was superseded by the iPad Mini 4 and the already discontinued iPad Mini 3, seeing its price dropped to under £250.
Better yet, as the iPad Mini 3 is basically the same tablet with added Touch ID you hardly miss out on anything by buying this older model, though you do miss out on the power-boost found in the iPad Mini 4.
It looks, feels and performs like something far more expensive making it our favorite budget tablet you can buy in 2017.

  • What's next? The iPad Mini 2 isn't the latest pint-sized slate from Apple, we've seen the iPad Mini 3 and iPad Mini 4 launch since the 2's arrival back in November 2013 - but the Mini 3 is dead and the Mini 4 is still more than the magic £250. We are due a new small slate though, with it being nearly two years since the fourth gen launched. Keep an eye out this September/October.

best Android tablets in 2017

Don't want iPad? Not using iPad? Then here is it the best Android tablets in 2017

Looking for a tablet and thinking about an Android device? Well, there are other options out there with Windows 10 tablets such as the Surface Pro 4 - but tablets running Android remain the main rival to the iOS 10-toting New iPad, iPad Pro 10.5, iPad Pro 12.9, iPad Pro 9.7 and iPad mini 4. And there are plenty of options to consider. Some Android tablets have 10-inch screens, others seven, some land somewhere in between and a handful even push the boundaries past 10 inches. There are also big differences in battery life, processing power, RAM and price.
Below you'll find our selection of the best Android tablets on the market right now. You'll find devices from all price and size points and these are the very best tablets powered by Google's own operating system.

The best slates running Google's OS , here we got the top slates for you!

1. Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Samsung's latest flagship Android slate is super
Weight: 429g | Dimensions: 237.3 x 169 x 6mm | OS: Android 7 | Screen size: 9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Snapdragon 820 | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 32GBGB | Battery: 6,000mAh | Rear camera: 13MP | Front camera: 5MP
RM2509.99
Great premium design
HDR-ready display is excellent
Keyboard is a costly extra
High price tag
Samsung's Galaxy Tab S3 is our favorite Android tablet in the world right now and replaces the Galaxy Tab S2, which is also a Samsung product.
This newer tablet is the best Android slate in the world thanks to a powerful processor and an excellent display that's prepped to show you HDR content, something even the iPad can't do yet.
There's an S-Pen stylus in the box and you'll also have the option of buying a keyboard too, but that will cost quite a bit extra.
The price of the Galaxy Tab S3 is high, but it's worth it when you look at all of the power and amazing features you'll get for that amount of money.

2. Asus ZenPad 3S 10

Image result for Asus ZenPad 3S 10

One of the best new Android tablets out
Weight: 430g | Dimensions: 240.5 x 163.7 x 7.2 mm | OS: Android Marshmallow | Screen size: 9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Mediatek MT8176 | RAM: 4GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 5MP
Strong, hi-res display
Swift response
Mediocre battery life
Not great build quality
Nope, that's not an iPad you can see just above. That's one of the latest tablets from Asus - the ZenPad 3S 10 - and it's our second favorite Android tablet you're able to buy right now.
There's decent power inside this slate as well as a super bright and beautiful display to look at on the front.
The battery life and build quality aren't the best on the market, but considering the lower price point than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 above, we'd recommend picking this up if you're looking for something a touch cheaper.

3. Google Pixel C

Image result for Google Pixel C

Pure Android on a premium tablet
Weight: 517g | Dimensions: 242 x 179 x 7mm | OS: Android 7.0 | Screen size: 10.2-inch | Resolution: 2560 x 1800 | CPU: Quad-core 1.9GHz | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: Up to 10 hours | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2MP
Fantastic screen
Premium design
Heavy
Keyboard is a pricey option
Google's done it – it's made one of the best Android tablets around. The Google Pixel C has it all: a fantastic display, heaps of power and a premium design.
Okay, it's not quite got it all - it's a little on the heavy side and the pricey (yet rather clever) keyboard dock isn't fully utilised by the Android interface, which is made very much for touch and not physical keys and productivity.
Those points aside, the Pixel C goes toe-to-toe with the iPad Air 2 and even the iPad Pro 9.7 with its clean stock Android interface, sultry metal body and super screen.
If you're looking for the best of Google in a tablet, the Pixel C gives you just that.

4. Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro

Image result for Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro

Taking 'Netflix and chill' to the next level
Weight: 665g | Dimensions: 246.9 x 179.1 x 4.6mm | OS: Android 5.1.1 | Screen size: 10.1-inch | Resolution: 2560 x 1600 | CPU: Intel Atom quad-core | RAM: 2GB | Storage: 16GB/32GB | Battery: 10,200mAh | Rear camera: 13MP | Front camera: 5MP
Integrated projector
Great audio
Heavy
Glitchy interface
The Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro is packed full of media-focused features and sports a unique, distinctive design.
There's a built in stand to take the heft off your hands, while the integrated projector means you can enjoy big screen entertainment away from your TV, though the screen is sharp enough that you won't always feel the need to use a projector anyway.
All that tech does make it less portable than most tablets on this list and the UI could be better, but it's a fairly unique option.

5. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

Image result for Samsung Galaxy Tab S2
Samsung's latest flagship Android slate is super
Weight: 256g/389g | Dimensions: 198.6 x 134.8 x 5.6mm/237.3 x 169 x 5.6mm | OS: Android 6.0.1 | Screen size: 8.0-inch/9.7-inch | Resolution: 1536 x 2048 | CPU: Octa-core | RAM: 3GB | Storage: 32GB/64GB | Battery: 4000mAh/5870mAh | Rear camera: 8MP | Front camera: 2.1MP
 Thinner, lighter design
Great screen
So-so battery life
Camera is mediocre
There are plenty of reasons to invest in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 - especially if you're after one of the best Android tablets on the market but at a cheaper price than the Galaxy Tab S3 above.
It's reading and web surfing-friendly, while the new 4:3 screen and general size and shape is better suited for most things. Videos work better on its predecessor thanks to its elongated aspect ratio - but they don't exactly look bad here.
You can pick the Tab S2 up in 8-inch and 9.7-inch variants, to challenge Apple's iPad and iPad mini ranges, with the smaller option being more portable and cheaper.
Almost impossibly thin, pumped full of power and with a slick version of Samsung's TouchWiz interface on board the Galaxy Tab S2 gives the iPad Pro 9.7 and Pixel C a real run for their money.

6. Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017)

Image result for Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017)

The best you can get at this price
Weight: 369g | Dimensions: 214mm x 128mm x 9.7mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 8-inch | Resolution: 1280 x 800 | CPU: Quad-core 1.3GHz | RAM: 1.5GB | Storage: 16/32GB | Battery: Up to 12 hours | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Good battery life
Decent value
Reflective screen
A little slow in places
The Amazon Fire HD 8 (2017) is among the best of the retail giant’s tablets, as while it’s in many ways lower end than the similar HD 10, the smaller screen is sharper as a result, and the price is lower.
It also delivers surprisingly strong gaming performance, with a decent amount of power for the money. The speakers aren’t great and the cameras are awful, but tablets aren’t for taking photos and you can always use headphones.
What you do get is solid if not spectacular performance, and tight integration with Amazon’s other services through Fire OS, all at a price that’s well below most of the non-Amazon branded competition. You should also note that if you already own the 2016 version of this tablet, it won't be worth upgrading to the 2017 version as the differences are very minimal.

7. Amazon Fire HD 10

Image result for Amazon Fire HD 10

An affordable way to enjoy Amazon's media
Weight: 432g | Dimensions: 262mm x 159mm x 7.7mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 10.1-inch | Resolution: 1280 x 800 | CPU: Quad-core 1.5GHz | RAM: 1GB | Storage: 16/32/64GB | Battery: Up to 8 hours | Rear camera: 5MP | Front camera: HD
Low price
Impressive speakers
Weak screen resolution
Plasticky design
The Amazon Fire HD 10 is one of the company’s flagship tablets, but to call it a flagship is misleading, as while it’s top of the range it still sports middling specs at best, but that’s okay, because it’s also very affordable.
Its 10.1-inch 1280 x 800 screen doesn’t provide a very sharp picture, but audio fares much better thanks to loud and clear stereo speakers, and with up to 64GB of built in storage plus a microSD card slot there’s plenty of room for apps, games and other media.
Which is good, because this being an Amazon product you’re faced with things to buy, download, rent and stream at every turn.

8. Amazon Fire 7 (2017)

Image result for Amazon Fire 7 (2017)

Almost unbelievably cheap
Weight: 295g | Dimensions: 115mm x 192mm x 9.6mm | OS: Fire OS | Screen size: 7-inch | Resolution: 1024 x 600 | CPU: Quad-core 1.3GHz | RAM: 1GB | Storage: 8/16GB | Battery: Up to 7 hours | Rear camera: 2MP | Front camera: VGA
Crazily cheap price
Decent media performance
Screen is dull and low res
Lacking app store
Tablets don’t get any cheaper than this – well, functional ones don’t anyway. The incredibly low price and sturdy design make the Amazon Fire 7 (2017) a great choice to give to a kid – in fact, Amazon’s even built a (pricier) version specifically for children.
But even for a grown audience the Amazon Fire far exceeds expectations, with a fairly bright 7.0-inch screen, acceptable speakers, solid battery life and even reasonable performance, with a snappy interface and the ability to run most games.
Fire OS won’t suit everyone and this isn’t a tablet that impresses once you take the price out of the equation, but for what the Amazon Fire costs it would almost be rude not to buy it.

2. Apple iPad Pro 10.5in

Price when reviewed: £619 - Buy now from John Lewis
The iPad Pro 10.5in replaces the 9.7in (below), as one of the best tablets Apple has ever made. The tablet is so powerful, that when used alongside its keyboard should be considered as a full-blown computer. This powerhouse runs Apple's latest A10X Fusion chip which will power through anything you throw at it. With an improved resolution, the latest iOS version and increased storage, the 10.5 variant is better in every single way over the 9.7in version. 3. Apple iPad Pro 9.7in

Price when reviewed: £499 - Buy now from Currys
The iPad Pro 9.7in was once one of the best tablets Apple had ever made, it has now been surpassed by its predecessors, and has officially been discontinued by Apple. You can still find it through various retailers, but its price might be inflated. Yet, its powerful processor, high-quality screen, speakers and even camera, there's very little competition for the iPad Pro 9.7in. It's smaller than the 12.9in variant, making it much less awkward. It doesn't quite replace a laptop, but its capabilities are vast, making it one of the best tablets on the market today.

4. Samsung Galaxy Book

Price when reviewed: £650 - Buy now from John Lewis
The Samsung Galaxy Book is powerful enough to be considered a laptop. There are two models in the product line, the 10.6in that features an Intel Core m3, and the more expensive 12in variant with an Intel Core i5 inside. Depending on your needs and your ideal size, the two tablets provide exceptional value for money. Both come bundled with a fantastic keyboard and stylus, which is a huge plus over Microsoft and Apple's equivalent.
Its beauty doesn't stop there, its display is absolutely flawless. A wide colour gamut results in a vibrant, colour accurate display, which means movies, games and browsing will be an extremely pleasant experience. There's not much to dislike from the Samsung Galaxy Book - if you're looking for the complete package, both the 10.6in and 12in tablets provide a fantastic alternative to the Surface Pro and iPad tablets.

6. New Microsoft Surface Pro 5

Price when reviewed: £2,149 - Buy now from Microsoft
The new Surface Pro (a.k.a. Surface Pro 5) is a top-class laptop/tablet hybrid that offers everything you'd ever need. Despite being the best tablet we've ever come across, its price alone will put many off it. Unlike some of its rivals, the new Surface Pro doesn't even include a Type Cover, which will need to be purchased separately for £125.
The new Surface Pro offers a luxurious experience, with a fantastic build and design that oozes quality. Its display is stunning and the blisteringly fast 7th generation Intel Core processor provides plenty of power. We reviewed the model with an i7-7660U inside, but you can save yourself a substantial amount if you were to downgrade to the i5 or m3 models.
If you're looking for the best tablet around that can convert into a fully functional Windows laptop, and have the budget, nothing truly beats the new Microsoft Surface Pro.

The iPad Air 2 is a thin and yet powerful tablet for its price. The Air 2 comes with Touch ID and has a relatively fast processor, useful for multitasking and browsing, while its integration with iOS works flawlessly and provides a smooth experience. A worthy tablet, and still a fantastic iPad to purchase. It should be noted that it has since been discontinued, but can still be found through third-party sellers.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 binned its 16:9 display for a 4:3 ratio, making it compete directly with the Apple iPad Air 2. Its resolution and colour accuracy are impressive for a tablet of its size. It runs on Android fluidly and has a premium build quality, making it a great iOS alternative.

10. Asus ZenPad 3S 10

Price when reviewed: £300 - Buy now from Currys
The Asus ZenPad 3S 10 has a gorgeous design and an impressive IPS display. It's a good iPad alternative, and if found for less than £300, it's a better buy than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7in, which is also highly regarded for its performance.

11. Samsung Galaxy Tab S3

Price when reviewed: £599 - Buy now from Amazon
The Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 takes on from the Tab S2. With a Snapdragon 820 processor, the tablet flies through intensive tasks and with its 4GB of RAM multitasking is a breeze. Samsung also includes an S-Pen stylus in the box, which makes it ideal for browsing and sketching.
You might be wondering, though, why does it end up lower down the list over the Tab S2. It's simple, the price. At around £600, it's not a cheap tablet - but if you can afford it and you're in the market for the best Android tablet on the market, get the Tab S3.

12. Google Pixel C

Price when reviewed: £399 - Buy now from the Google Store
The portable and elegant Google Pixel C is a great tablet for single task working and multimedia playback. It has an impressive battery life and coupled with its keyboard (sold separately), it's great for long commutes. As a Google device, it receives Android updates extremely quickly, and you'll be able to experience true vanilla Android. Unfortunately, its OS does limit its use, meaning it isn't quite a laptop replacement.
