15 Tips to Drive Organic Traffic to your Blog with Pinterest

15 Tips to Drive Organic Traffic to your Blog with Pinterest

Are you a blogger? Do you use Pinterest to market your blog?

Pinterest ROCKS for bloggers and it’s a platform that really excites me. Pinterest gives you, as a blogger such a great opportunity to drive targeted visitors straight to your blog posts.

According to Shareaholic:

Pinterest drives more social referral traffic than Twitter, LinkedIn, Reddit, Stumble Upon, YouTube and Google Plus COMBINED!

Can you see why Pinterest is definitely a powerful platform for you to embrace?

If you are looking to learn how to drive traffic back to your blog organically with Pinterest, you’ve come to the right place. Just the other day I was on an exclusive training with Vincent Ng from MGNG Marketing – He is quite the Pinterest expert.

Vincent shared loads of golden nuggets. I took a tonne of notes – so let me share some of those with you to help you with your Pinterest Marketing (I can’t share them all, as it was an exclusive training after all).

Facebook is King of social referrals, but Pinterest is now Queen for driving traffic to your blog.

Tip #1 See what is HOT on Pinterest

Not what is trending, but what is popular in your particular niche. Search the keywords related to your content and look for common colours, shapes, colour backgrounds etc. Look for pins with lots of likes and repins that you can model to create awesome pins for your blog.

Tip #2 Be a Tease!

Engage people with your visuals. Many people create wonderful infographics – these are great for brand awareness and do get lot’s of repins – but they give people no reason to click through to your blog. Create a pin, give some info, but don’t give the whole info away on the pin. Tease people and make them click through for the full info. See my pinnable image at the end of this post as an example. You’ll see I share 3 of these tips on the image – not 15. Got to give people a reason to click to learn more on my blog.

Pinterest Tip - Be a Pinterest Tease - infographics are great for brand awareness and do get lot's of repins - but they give people no reason to click through to your site.

Tip #3 Focus on the pain!

Solve problems for people. Create pins that solve an evergreen problem. People use Pinterest as a visual search engine, so they are looking for an urgent answer to their problems when they turn to Pinterest. Address the pain point – again don’t give the full answer away, force them to want to click through to your blog.

Pinterest Tip - Focus on the pain - Create Pins that solve an evergreen problem.

Tip #4 Design for a mobile device

80% of daily traffic to Pinterest comes from mobile devices. So the mobile experience is super important. Be sure your pins are nice an long – vertical images not horizontal. To occupy the maximum space on a mobile device or on a desktop the perfect size is 735px wide x 1102px long. Check how your pins look on both an iPhone and an Android to get a clear visual for yourself.

Tip #5 Get Rich Pins

If you are using Pinterest for business you should apply for rich pins. They visually stand out on Pinterest and because Pinterest has to actually check your blog, they give your blog credibility. If you haven’t got Rich Pins yet I have a tutorial all about how to set up Pinterest RICH PINS on your blog.

Tip #6 Provide your pin with a sibling

Tip #8 Repin your popular pins

Don’t be afraid to repin a popular pin onto the same board again. Get more traffic and repins by recycling older pins.

Tip #9 Include a Pinnable image

Include a specifically optimised pinnable vertical image for your blog visitors to pin while they are reading your blog. This will help bring more organic traffic back to your site.

There are plugins that allow you to hide the pinnable image until the PinIt button is clicked and then the pinnable image is shown. Vincent recommends Social Warfare for this. I actually like to include my vertical pinnable image at the bottom of this post. Although all my images are actually pinnable (thanks to SumoMe) – hover over any of them and you’ll see the social icons – just click to share!

Pinterest Tip - Include a specifically optimised pinnable image for your blog visitors to pin while they are reading your blog.

Tip #10 Great descriptions matter

Write pin descriptions that will make people want to click through on your pins to read more on your blog. Entice people with your descriptions. The first 100 characters show up on a mobile device – 500 show up on the desktop version. Make sure you include 2-3 keywords in each pin description to maximise the visibility in the search results.

Pinterest Tip - Great descriptions matter - The first 100 characters are most important. Include 2-3 keywords.

Tip #11 Guided search is your best friend

When you use the search in Pinterest, suggested word tiles come up to help the user narrow their search to find exactly what they were looking for. You can use that data to help you find keywords relevant to your pins.

Pinterest Tip - Pinterest 'Guided Search' is your best friend. Use that data to help you find keywords relevant to your pins.

Tip #12 Meta Data comes first for Rich Pins on mobile

Don’t underestimate the power of meta data descriptions for your blog images. Take time to make them Pin friendly!

Tip #15 Find the best time to Pin

You can use the Tailwind App to schedule pins and find the best time to actually pin, for your timezone and community. Vincent Ng highly recommends Tailwind.

He says:

One of the reasons I LOVE Tailwind is that they will recommend times for you to pin based on the engagement levels of your pins with their Plus plan. This means that as you start pinning more often, they will recommend more and more times that you should pin.

Pinterest Tip - Use the Tailwind App to find the best time to Pin based on the engagement levels of your Pins.

And remember people are using Pinterest as a visual search engine – so it’s really important to get your blog on there and optimised well.
