12 Gardening Ideas Made Easy You Can Start Today

12 Gardening Ideas Made Easy You Can Start Today

Before you start with your garden project, examine your yard where you intend to plant all those flowers and bushes. Check the type of soil you have and also decide what kind of garden you want to have, if you want to create an ornamental garden for flowers and foliage or have a vegetable garden and herb garden. Whichever type of garden you wish to have, we have here some basic tips on how to start it and make it thrive.

1. If you wish to grow flowers choose between annuals and perennials or you can mix both types of plant. Start small and then you may just add a few plants as you grow your garden.

2. Plant according to the type of soil in your garden. Choose the right plants that would best fit in your soil type if it is sandy and light or heavy and clay. Plants grow better in heavy and clayish type of soil.

3. If you have a small space and need to plant in pots, you need to prepare the pots starting with removing the salt deposit. You can do this by combining an equal amount of rubbing alcohol, vinegar and water placed inside a spray bottle. Spray directly on the inside part of the pot and then brush.

4. Give the plants enough space and don’t be tempted to plant too many plants; you have to give them space to grow. Though abundant planting that spills over into pathways looks pretty but sometimes it tends to look messy and cluttered.

5. Be gentle with the new plants, especially in removing them from their pots and replanting it in the ground. Pulling it carelessly would hurt and bruise their stems and would impede growth, even cause for it not to survive. What you can do is to gently insert a ruler or spoon inside the pot and run it around the plant to loosen it then turn it upside-down while using your hand to catch as it slides down.

6. Soak first the roots of the plants in water before placing it in the soil and don’t forget to make the hole bigger than the size of the root ball. You have to give it enough space to grow and enough room to spread the roots so it can absorb moisture better and get the nutrients from the soil.

7. If you are a first time gardener and do not really know much about plants, labeling them will help you identify the name of the plant and where you put it. Some plants may look like weeds when they are still very small and you might accidentally pluck it out thinking it’s a weed.

8. Weeds are your worst enemy in gardening, you have to be very brutal with it and not give it any chance to encroach into your garden. Weeds will steal the nutrients and the water from the soil leaving your plants with fewer nutrients to absorb. You have to make sure that you maintain your garden weed-free by removing weeds regularly including the roots. You can also make a homemade weed killer using only three household ingredients, mix inside an empty spray bottle an equal portion of dishwashing liquid, vinegar and salt. Just be careful since it can also kill the grass, best to use it in sidewalk cracks and your landscape borders.

9. If you have a very large yard and you wish to start a small garden, break the large portion of the yard by using a dry creek bed. It can add visual interest to your garden making your garden look amazing and most of all it serves as drainage and could help redirect rainwater on a slope. Very useful but with very low maintenance.

10. Fertilizing your plants will complement with good drainage and sunlight, making your plants healthier and beautiful. You can choose whether to fertilize with chemicals or organic. Potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus are the common chemical fertilizers used in gardening, while manure from animals is the preferred organic fertilizer. If you think your plants are getting enough nutrients from the soil and enough sunlight then no need for fertilizers, just water and lots of TLC.

 11. One more trick in starting with your seedlings is to plant them in citrus peel. Peelings of
oranges and lemon are not only cute to plant your seedlings in but it will compost in the soil and give nutrients to the plant.

12. If you need to build a raised garden, don’t worry if you can’t create one that is made out of wood. You can make a raised garden bed made out of cinder blocks; it will make planting easier since it has holes that can easily separate your herbs or flowering plants. You can adjust the size of your raised garden bed according to the space you want to utilize.
Whatever your reasons for creating a garden, don’t forget to have fun with it; you may encounter mistakes and roadblocks but never give up. Once you have achieved your dream garden, you will be able to enjoy and reap the fruits of your labor for as long as you continue to work on it.

Be well, beloveds, and be grateful.
