One of the more simple uses for an Android device is to use it as a calculator and this is one of the better uses. You have your Android device on your pretty much all the time which means you have a calculator on you at pretty much all times. There are even many kinds of calculators. Here are the best Android calculator apps!

Algeo Graphing Calculator

[Price: Free with in app purchases]
First up is Algeo Graphing Calculator and it’s a very solid option for casual use and academic use. It has a simple interface which makes basic calculations a breeze and digging into the app a little bit reveals some more complicated functions that you’ll likely need for your trigonometry class or algebra class. The graphing part is solid but not overly feature filled. It’s definitely no substitute for a TI-series graphing calculator but for simple applications, it’s good.

Andie Graph

[Price: Free]
Andie Graph isn’t a calculator on the face of it. It’s actually a TI-series emulator that lets you run TI-series ROMs (think video game emulators). That means it’s possible to have an actual TI calculator on your device. You’ll have to procure yourself a TI ROM and those instructions are available online. It’s a little complicated but once you get it done, you can keep your bulky calculator in the desk drawer and just use your phone. Warning: some schools and classes won’t let you use this substitute. You should ask your teacher before switching over to this permanently and don’t throw away your actual TI calculator.

Calcu: The Ultimate Calculator

[Price: Free / $1.96]
Calcu is a calculator app that focuses more on style than functionality. It has the basic stuff with some extra functions thrown in. It’s good for your run-of-the-mill math classes and it can be used for light trig, calculus, and even physics thanks to its customization but you’ll probably end up defaulting to a more specialized calculator for anything more complex. It also comes with 12 themes, a customizable keypad, and a sleek design.

Calculator++

[Price: Free / $3.99]
Calculator++ is a scientific/graphing calculator option with a lot of unique features. Along with the basic stuff, you get a dedicated copy/paste button, support for Android 1.6 and up, a widget, and more. The design is a little old school and a tad cluttered but most complex calculators share that negative aspect. Much like Calcu, it’s great for the basics and some light computations in the more complex mathematics. It’s also open source which is always a good thing.

Calculator (CyanogenMod)

[Price: Free]
Calculator (CyanogenMod) is the calculator app that has been inside of the CyanogenMod ROM since 2012 and it’s also open source and used in other AOSP ROMs. It comes with some basic graphing functionality along with some of the more basic advanced math functions that you’ll likely need. It hides it all behind a simple and sleek interface so it can be used for the basic stuff without feeling bloated or confusing. It’s also totally free which is great.

Calculator Plus and Fraction Calculator

[Price: Free / $0.99 and Free / $0.99 respectively]
Developers Digitalchemy, LLC have released not one, but two calculators and they’re both really good. The first is Calculator Plus which is essentially a calculator for dummies. On basic calculators, you hit buttons and the calculator does things and it doesn’t ever explain what it did. Calculator Plus shows its work so you know what happened. It comes with a fun, colorful design and is compatible with Samsung’s Multi-Window for those with Samsung Devices. Fraction Calculator is a calculator designed for those who are math-challenged or for kids. It allows you to type in fractions in a manner people who are bad at math can understand and includes enough extra functionality to keep a kid going through middle and potentially some of high school as well. These are two solid calculators.

Financial Calculators

[Price: Free]
Financial Calculators are a set of calculators to help with calculations in and around finance. It contains things like a credit card payoff calculator, APR calculator, loan calculator, currency converter, stocks and bonds calculators, and much more. What makes this so useful is the fact that a lot of people don’t know how to calculate these things on their own and this helps them with those uncomfortable terms and equations that many people don’t know. It’s also totally free.

Graphing Calculator MathlabPRO

[Price: Free with in app purchases / $1.99]
Graphing Calculator MathlabPRO is a scientific calculator and graphing calculator with a lot of functionalityh. On the scientific side of things, you can have trig functions, inverse functions, scientific and engineering notation, derivatives, and more. For graphics, you have quite a bit more functionality than you usually see outside of the TI-series calculators and that includes 3D graphs on the Pro version. It’s solid and powerful but you don’t really see the awesome unless you pay for it and that may upset some people.

Handyman Calculator

Much like Financial Calculators, Handyman Calculator contains a number of equations and functionality for a specific profession. Included in this little gem are calculators that help you calculate square and cubic footage, woodworking, electrical calculations, asphalt volume, concrete, brick, mortar, and sand, and plenty more. If you work in one of the many handyman professions, this is a calculator that you should definitely check out.

Mobi Calculator

[Price: Free / $3.20]
Mobi Calculator is more of a classic scientific calculator in terms of look and feel. That means it has a crowded interface with a lot of buttons and they all do multiple things. This is great for people who are still use to the old way of doing things when buttons had multiple uses and the ratings reflect that many people quite enjoy the familiarity. It contains all the basic stuff along with logarithms, trig functions, Radix mode, percentages, and more. There are also multiple themes in case you want a different look.

MyScript Calculator

MyScript Calculator is an interesting entry. Instead of having buttons and the like, it allows you to literally write out the equations you need solved and it’ll attempt to solve it for you. The basics are all covered and you can put down some pretty complicated algebra and trig without there being any hiccups. It’s recommended for people with tablets although it does work on phones as well but you’ll likely want a stylus to get maximum enjoyment. There aren’t a lot of functions available but it handles what is available quite well and it’s a unique premise.

Numix Calculator

Numix Calculator is another one that focuses a bit more on style. It adheres to Google’s Material Design standard and was one of the first calculator apps to do so. It features some bright colors and a sleek interface that is just enjoyable to use. The free version is a basic calculator while the pro version includes additional mathematical functionality, more themes, and more. It’s open source, has a widget (great for tablets!), and it’s great for basic math uses.

RealCalc

[Price: Free / $3.49]
RealCalc was one of the first really good scientific calculators ever available on Android. It features a cluttered interface not unlike Mobi Calculator above. That said, it does do a lot with a little bit of space. It has only one screen and you can do a ridiculous number of things inside of it. It’s one of the highest rated Android apps out there and it’s been around forever. About the only downside is the interface looks older, but not bad.

Wolfram Alpha

[Price: $2.99]
Wolfram Alpha isn’t a calculator app but it does have a calculator included. It’s a knowledge app that shows you statistics and facts about all sorts of things including things like math, statistics, physics, chemistry, engineering, and much, much more. It’s one of the “smartest” apps ever released on Android and you can do calculations on it using its built in calculator. It’s one of the few apps that we would recommend to all math students no matter how advanced it is. Wolfram Alpha is a must-have app.

Skeuomorphism may be out of favor in mobile design, but don't tell that to Calculator Plus (Android, iOS), an app that unashamedly mirrors the feel of an old-school desk calculator. While distinctly old-fashioned in looks, Calculator Plus takes advantage of the digital format with extra features such as a clear calculation history and the ability to go back and make corrections. The app is ad-supported, with an in-app purchase removing ads.

Calculator++ is another high quality, feature-packed Android calculator that comes loaded with tons of operations, variables, modes and settings sure to warm the heart of a dedicated cruncher. It's your scientific and graphing calculator all wrapped up into a single convenient, mobile package, with an equation editor, operation history, built-in and user definable variables, automatic expression simplification, complex calculations, a windowed mode and more. Calculator ++ is ad-supported, but only displays ads in its secondary screens. The interface could be neater, but given how much power is crammed into Calculator ++, it's understandable.

Wolfram Alpha (Android, iOS) (Free)

It seems a disservice to the power of Wolfram Alpha (Android, iOS) to lump it in among calculator apps, but it deserves a place here because Wolfram Alpha's computational knowledge engine is a wizard when it comes to queries involving math, numbers, calculations and statistics (along with 29 other disciplines). Not only will Wolfram Alpha help you do the math, it'll also give you formula details, graphic representations and explanations for how the app got to the solution. The major downside? Wolfram Alpha needs an internet connection, so if you've got spotty mobile signal, you're going to need another backup calculator.

MobiCalculator (Android) (Free, $3.40)

MobiCalculator (formerly CubeCalculator) has been a long-time staple for Android users looking for a powerful and customizable calculator app. The main screen covers your basic arithmetic operations and parenthesis, as well as two customizable buttons. A Mode button provides access to trigonometric and logarithmic functions. The app's settings menu provides hexadecimal, binary and octal support, as well as a viewable 50-line operation history. The pro version allows for a 1,000-line history, support for five-line expressions, and additional visual themes.

MyScript Calculator (Android, iOS) (Free)

MyScript Calculator (Android, iOS) comes to the rescue of those of us accustomed to writing down equations on pen and paper rather than transcribing them into a calculator. A handwriting recognition system allows users to write down equations and have the app calculate results. MyScript supports basic arithmetic, as well as percent, square roots, trigonometric (and inverse) functions, logarithms and constants such as pi and Euler's number.

Best Text Editor apps for Smart Phone

Do you find yourself wanting to create basic text documents while you’re out and about? You probably carry your phone with you wherever you go, but it’s likely you leave the laptop at home on occasion. But this is no obstacle, since there are more than a few great Android text editors and note-taking apps you can use on your Android phone.
What we’re looking for today is the perfect minimalist full-screen Android text editor. The goal ultimately is to be able to write in a distraction-free environment using an Android phone or tablet. However, when it comes to writing, a phone app’s utility is vastly increased by being able to sync to online storage and applications for other operating systems, browsers and web apps. The app that does both of these things best will be the winner in my eyes, but I will also rank highly anything that excels at being distraction-free. Being able to quickly get to a screen where you can start writing is a boon, too.
Since I’m using an HTC Desire, I also have a need for small Android text editor apps on my phone. Anything that takes up too much space on my phone gets deleted in short order, no matter how awesome it is.
Some of the note-taking apps available are fantastic at quickly allowing you to get writing, so I’ll compare a few of those too. You may also like to read Joel’s comparison of four of the top note-taking apps for Android: SpringPad, Catch, Evernote and OneNote. Of these apps, only Evernote and OneNote are renowned for being minimalist, so we’ll touch on those briefly in order to compare them with the other Android text editor apps I’ve found.

Simple Notepad

Simple Notepad is surprisingly feature-laden for such a small app. Besides editing text in a simple full-screen view, you can also add photos, use voice input, upload to Google Drive/Evernote/Dropbox, send the note to your calendar, pin it to your notifications bar, turn notes into checklists, make widgets of your notes, add reminders, password protect notes and much more. In the settings, you can choose to open a new note when the app is opened, making it really quick to use. Note that the default lined look is optional. However, for all its features, Simple Notepad is not an app for styling text, so keep that in mind.

Ads by Google

Flick Note

Flick Note looks great, but is lacking in features compared to some of the other apps. This is because things like widgets and to-do lists are reserved for the paid version. It does allow text formatting, and it has neat tools like saving to HTML format. Flick Note will sync with simplenote.com but not yet with the big cloud storage providers.

Google Docs

The Google Drive application gives you access to all your Google Documents and lets you create new ones easily. The documents sync to Google online and back to your computers if you have Google Drive installed. It’s quick to start a new document and get writing, plus the interface is beautifully simple. Sadly, the app is enormous. And no, using Google docs through the browser doesn’t compare.

Jota

Jota (pronounced iota) is a little simplistic compared to the other apps. However, Jota is quite powerful and geek-friendly, with a lot of emphasis on character codes. This open-source app also has spell-check and voice input apps available to complement it. Upon opening Jota, you’re instantly working with a new document, ready to type. The first time you save each document, you’re faced with a lot of choices, which is good for control freaks but not so much for time-saving.

Writer

Writer is by far the smallest of these editing apps at 96K! It’s well-designed, being both simple and stylish using black-and-white. Entering a note is quick, and saving the note is automatic when you quit the note. If you exit the app, your note in progress will re-open. Writer uses a simple markdown notation to format the text. Information such as word count can be found under the “i” button.

Evernote

Evernote is everything you could possibly want in a note-taking, syncing application. It’s easy to organise, you can record all sorts of thoughts, photos, audio and whatever. It’s sleek and easy-to-use when you’re writing, too. You can get writing pretty quickly using the note button. Where it falls down is that it’s a gigantic app.

OneNote

OneNote is a beautifully elegant app, which syncs to Skydrive and then your office documents on your desktop. You can get straight into writing and format things nicely as you go. Requires Android 2.3 and up.

Also To Try

There were a number of great looking apps that I didn’t compare in this review (due to incompatibility with my phone mainly), but which may well be worth a closer look: Springpad; Catch; Write (for tablets only – available for a few dollars); Wordpad (beta); Android Text Editor (costs a few dollars); Lightpaper (review of Lightpaper here); and Draft (costs a few dollars).

Which Minimalist Text Editor Is Best?

So, which of these is best? Well, it depends on what you want (of course). If you’re already a heavy Evernote, OneNote or Google Docs user, and you can spare the space, it may be easier to just use their app directly. If you’re looking for a sleek, small app to do quick notes with a little formatting, choose Writer. It’s tiny and amazingly good at what it does. If you’re looking for note-taking with all the bells and whistles bar formatting, choose Simple Notepad. It’s small, incredibly powerful, has many unexpectedly useful features, yet can be adjusted to suit whatever your style is.
